Great Artesian Basin

Management Target:
Water pressure stabilised in key regions, as defined by NSW Great Artesian Basin Advisory Group, by 2015

The WCMA will support the Great Artesian Basin Advisory Group (GABAG) in their implementation of the Great Artesian Basin Sustainability Initiative (GABSI) through the NSW Cap and Pipe the Bores (CPTB) program. The CPTB will continue to be implemented by the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources across the Great Artesian Basin with the WCMA providing support for associated natural resource activities that may not be funded under the CPTB.

Associated programs may include:

  • Facilitation of community engagement in the Cap & Pipe the Bores program
  • Mound springs impact study carried out and appropriate incentive program developed for ongoing management.
  • Promotion of more appropriate land management programs associated with the removal of free access to water and the decommissioning of open bore drains – ‘The Next Steps’ project
