There are two Catchment Targets for rivers and groundwater. They are that the Surface Water Health Index Rating is improved at 60% of relevant monitoring sites and maintained at all other monitoring sites by 2016.

The second is that salinity in the Barwon-Darling at Wilcannia is less than 80EC for 80% of the time as measured on a daily basis and less than 350EC for 50% of the time by 2016.

Four programs are established to contribute to meeting this target:

Water Quality and Salinity

Surface Water Management

Groundwater Management

The Western CMA works towards meeting the target by funding individuals, groups and organisations undertaking onground works or training contributing to that target through its incentive programs.Click here to read more about our real life achievements in improving rivers and groundwater.

The Western CMA also coordinates 'broadscale projects' - large undertakings beyond the scope of individuals that are essential for the health of the Catchment.
